Dog House Ideas For DIY Enthusiasts

There are literally thousands of possible dog house ideas waiting for you to make them your own. Whether it's a complex designer dog kennel, or a simple traditional dog house, the possibilities are almost endless. This article aims to offer you inspiration, and shows you how to make a good start to this great DIY project.

Starting With The Basics

Before you begin brainstorming a bunch of quirky dog house ideas, it's important to get the basics down. Any DIY kennel needs to be practical, otherwise it's just pointless. It's best to decide on size, practicalities, and building material before anything else.

As far as size goes, it obviously depends on the breed of dog, and the number of them. A traditional dog house will suffice for most people, but you might also like to opt for a large, duplex kennel. This saves a lot of materials, and allows your pets to sleep close to each other in the same building.

Next comes practicalities. There are quite a few options available here, but for now we'll discuss only the basics. Do you want a flat roof or an angular roof? Do you want to install a doggy door? How will the kennel be ventilated? What about insulation? Think about things like this, and write them down.

When choosing a building material with which to construct your dog's house, there are 3 options: wood, brick, and metal. Wood is the easiest to work with, but brick may suit you better if you live in a hot climate. Metal is generally a bit difficult to keep cool during summer.

Styling Ideas

This is the fun part! Rather than building just another dog house, why not dress it up a bit?

- Give it a good paint job.
- Install a small ring for a dog leash.
- Cut out some "windows" and use a hinge and some plywood for the shutters.
- Blend the kennel in with the surrounding garden.

Wood Dog House - Build Wooden Or Plastic Dog House?

Although wood dog houses are common among many families who own dogs, not many people know there are many different types of wood available for your dog house.

The most common type of wood used is cedar. It is one of the most popular choices for wooden dog houses because of its resistance to decay and as well as insect and rot resistance.

Cedar is easy to work with and it is durable and reliable and can be work for long periods of time without any maintenance.

Other types of wood that are used in building dog houses include pine and hemlock though they are less common. One reason is because they lack the insect and decay resistance compared to cedar wood. That is also why they are seldom used as the base structure of your dog house as they decay and rot faster especially when they come into contact with the ground.

If you are building your own dog house, beware of using pressure-treated wood. This is because although they are resistant to decay and insects, they contain harmful chemicals that could pose a danger to your dog.

Most older pressure treated wood uses chromated copper arsenate which can be deadly to animals. Nevertheless, over the past few years, other chemicals have been used to create pressure treated wood and it is safer.

Wood is also better than plastic in building dog houses because they stay much warmer during the winter. Wood also helps to dissipate heat naturally during the summer months.

Wood is also easier to work with compared to plastic. You only need a saw and a hammer to build your own dog house. If you are eco-conscious, then building wooden dog houses is also more environmentally friendly and can easily be recycled for other purposes. It is also cheaper than plastic.

Insulated Dog House - The Best Material You Should Go For

Dogs are very popular pets and they are found in almost in every household. The fact remains that a lot of dogs may not have their own private place like a dog house to stay in. If you have not gone for a dog kennel yet you should. Dogs, just like any other creature needs a space for his own privacy and a pet house is a perfect tool to play that role. An insulated dog house perfect is the perfect choice.

If you are considering buying a new house for your pet then you may wonder which type of dog kennel you should go for.

There are basically three main types of dog houses when it comes to the material it is made of.

We have the:

Wood
Plastic
Iron

Let me tell you straight away. Don't ever go for the iron dog house as it becomes completely useless during periods of extreme changes in the surrounding temperature. Iron is a metal and it quickly changes temperature as the environmental temperature changes.

Plastic is also known to be a good insulator. A lot of dog owner would love to go for the plastic ones because they are cheaper and easy to assemble. But the fact is they may not last that long. and also are not the best solution when it comes to fighting cold in the winter.

Also plastic houses turn to crack in the long run as they are exposed to the sun rays. Other than that, plastic dog kennels are not a bad choice. They protect from insect and rain and a lot of dogs would enjoy it.

There is better and more durable than plastic. That is wood. Even though wood may be subject to insects like termites, it is known to be the best material a pet house could be made of.

These are the reasons

It is most resistant to weather protecting your dog when it cold or when it is hot. It is more durable: Cedar wood made dog kennels are known to discourage the dogs from chewing it. (May not be the case with plastic dog house)

So there you have it. If you intend to go for a dog kennel that you want to be durable and protect your dog against the odds of the weather you should just go for cedar wood made dog houses, period.

Dog Kennel Parts and Designs

Constructing your own DIY dog kennel can save you hundreds. However, merely purchasing prefabricated dog kennel parts isn't going to save you anything. In fact, many so called "kits" are more expensive that completed kennels! This article discusses building a dog house from scratch, and points you in the direction to get started ASAP.

Raw Materials Vs Pre-fabricated Dog Kennel Parts

I'd like to start by explaining why constructing using raw materials is far better than purchasing pre-made bits and pieces. In 90% of cases, dog house kits are just a few bits of plastic or wood with pre-drilled holes and a bag of screws. If you don't believe this, go and look for yourself. There is absolutely no point from a financial point of view to invest in this kind of thing.

On the other hand, raw materials such as treated pine, plywood, sheet metal, nails, staples, and all the rest are much, much cheaper than kits. You may also qualify for a discount from your local lumber yard if you ask politely. Also, you or your neighbors may already have most of the required materials laying in your backyard junk heap! Ask around, it may be worth it.

Simple Dog House Design Options

Whether you opt to build from wood, brick, or sheet metal, it's always nice to build from a high quality design. You can buy them in your local hardware store, or download them as a package from the internet.

Design options include:

- Flat or angular roofed projects. Flat roofs provide extra sun space for your dog, and angular roofs allow water to run off easily.

- Single or duplex constructions. If you've got more than one pet, this is a GREAT idea. They can sleep apart in their own "rooms" during the summer, or can snuggle together during winter. This is made possible by a removable separating wall.

- You can add extra features, like a ring to attach a dog leash, or even some windows and shelving to place external pot plants.

The Comfort of a Wooden Dog House

Expecting your dog to stay outside can be a tough and guilt-stricken task but sometimes pets are too clumsy and track in too much dirt to allow them to be in the house at all times. A wooden dog house is a good way to give your dog its own living space and sleep comfortably outdoors. There are many aspects of a wooden dog house that make it a comfortable and secure place to leave your pets.

The wood to make dog houses is one of the reasons these structures will make your pet so comfortable. Redwood and cedar dog houses will stay beautiful and sturdy for a long time, even after being exposed to all of the weather elements your climate has to offer season after season. Cedar also has the ability to repel insects like flies and fleas, which is good news for you as well as your pet. Your pet will have a comfortable home to come home to year after year, as wood is very durable and long lasting. These woods will also stay cool in extreme heat and do not warp or split due to moisture.

Many wooden dog houses now come with quality insulation built inside. It is designed to make the house stay cool in the summer and keep in warmth during the winter, eliminating the guilt you will feel leaving the dog out in the cold.

Rain will also have a hard time flooding or disturbing the wooden dog house. Most houses are made so the floor on the inside is elevated.

You will probably be more apt to put an attractive looking structure in the middle of your yard than a tacky one. All too often, dog owners will place the home behind the house so it does not disturb the look of the yard. Training the dog to stay in its dog house is harder when they are placed behind the house because dogs are extremely social animals and they will not want to remain in a place where they cannot see or hear what is going on with the people around them.

Wooden dog houses can also be built with doors placed off to the side rather than in the center. This is a comfortable for your dog because it allows the dog to hide from harsh wind or rain coming inside. There are also detachable vinyl flaps available for some doors to allow the dog to go in and out easily as well as protect them from the wind or rain.

Wooden dog houses are also available in many sizes. A dog should be able to sit, stand, and turn around easily inside the house and wooden dog houses are easier to be custom made to fit the unique size of your canine.

There are also many accessories that can add to the comfort of a wooden dog house. Cushions, pads, and mats can make the house more comfortable and most will match the wood chosen. Expensive and luxurious accessories such as air conditioning and heating units can be purchased and hooked up inside the house. Wooden dog houses can also be custom engraved or painted to match your yard as well as your dog's unique personality.

Dog House - Build a Suitable House For Your Beloved Pup!

Everyone loves to have a pet in his home to spend his leisure with him. If you are also from those who love animals and a true dog lover then read this article because I am going to reveal some important tips that can be very helpful for you to build a proper house for your dog.

For sure if you are going to buy a pup then it is also quite important to build a perfect home for him. Most of the people think that their pet can easily live with them in their home or apartment but they are totally wrong. As you know that a dog is a very sensitive and good observer but it has feelings and emotions too. So, after purchasing a dog it is strongly recommended to construct a cozy house for him where he can live and spend his time without any outside interruption.

As I mentioned earlier that animals have emotions too and they love to live in their own territory or place instead of an open room where everyone can distract them. Constructing a home for your dog is not such a big deal but you have to apply some vital steps before making a house. First thing you have to keep in mind is the size of your dog. Do measure the width and height of your dog before building any thing. If your dog is too big then try to make the house a little wide where he can stay comfortably.

Second most important thing after this step is to find a suitable location where the house is safe from extreme weather conditions. Always build the house above the ground level so that in rainy seasons the water could not enter the house. Moreover, paint the walls of the dog house with proper paints and also apply the sprays on the walls of house to kill germs and other insects that can harm the house and dog as well.

Lastly, these few techniques are quite significant and you can easily make your dog happy by building him a perfect dog house. For further details, you can also surf the websites given below.

Building an Inexpensive Dog House

Building a dog house is a great way to protect your dog from the outside elements. You can build a nice dog house in a few hours with materials you may be able to find lying around in your garage. If you would like to build an inexpensive house for your dog, here are some tips you need to follow:

Search around for materials you aren't using like plywood, pine wood 2x4s, shingles, nails, and other materials. To build a dog house, you will need the following tools:

Pen or pencil
Hammer
Table saw or circular saw
Shingle utility knife
Roofing nails
Regular nails
Plywood
Pressure-treated lumber
Roofing shingles
Tape measure

The materials you need include:

One exterior grade plywood sheet (about 4 feet by 8 feet and 5/8'' thick)
Two 2''x4''x8' pressure treated boards
One 2''x4''x8' untreated boards
One box of 1-5/8'' galvanized deck screws
One bundle of composite roof shingles
One tube of wet/dry roof cement

If you don't have some of the materials lying around, go to a construction site and rummage through their scrap pile. You will be able to find a lot of 2x4 untreated and treated boards that were cut too small, etc. Ask the contractor if you can have their unused "scrap" and bring it home to build your dog house. You can also find roofing shingles at a construction site.

You need to determine the type of dog house you are building. Obtain your dog's measurements and then tack on the proper amount of space needed for your particular dog. The common dog house plans include an A-frame or a slanted dog house. Once you have all the supplies, tools, and plans, you can begin building your dog's house.

No matter what style you build, it needs to be elevated from the ground. Use some 2x4's to construct a base for the dog house and drill holes in the 2x4s to allow moisture to escape and to prevent rot. Once you have your base ready, you can begin building the basic framework. It is best to start with the floor and work your way up. The walls are easy to frame and the roof is simple, depending upon the style of house you have chosen to build. If you have extra insulation lying around, place it in the wall and frame it off. Your dog will chew on the insulation if he finds it, so caulk around the edges of the wall to seal it off.

Before you place the roof on the house, you need to see how easily it can be cleaned. Many dog owners are using hinged roofs because they can open the top and clean the inside of the dog's house easily. Hinged roofs work best on slanted dog houses, although they can be done on an A-frame dog house.

Once you place the roof, you will need to install the shingles. If you have tar paper, lay it first and install the tiles from the bottom up, overlapping each other slightly. When you reach the end, seal it off with wet/dry roof cement to prevent water from getting underneath and leaking.

You can now paint or stain your dog's house. Check the inside for nails or slivers that could cause your dog harm. Sand the doorway so that you and your dog don't get slivers. Use a waterproof paint or stain so it will withstand the elements.

Get Rid of Smell - How to Get Rid of Bad Odor in a House

So you finally found a decent looking foreclosure. But there is a small problem with it - the smell! Perhaps it's dog smell, or maybe it's a mildew smell or something else. But that doesn't matter, what does is that you want to get rid of it and you want to get rid of it fast! If that's your situation then you've come to the right place! This article will teach you several methods that you can use to get rid of smell.

Of course different types of smells require different solutions, which is why you should check out the site mentioned below for articles that cover the type of smell you need to get rid of. With that said there are some things that should be useful in any situation:

The first and most obvious is using fresh air to clear out an existing smell. After all smell is nothing more than molecules in the air that we can smell. The more air you can circulate through the home, the less "smelly" molecules will be left and the less smelly it will be. If you can, leave windows open for the night to let the air circulate.

Another popular method is to use vinegar to absorb any smell. You can also use various cleaners and air fresheners such as Fabreze to either get rid of or mask a smell. If you need to mask a smell for a specific time period you can burn some aromatic candles or use the good ol' method of baking cookies - baking cookies will put a strong (and pleasant) smell in the air. You can cook something else, but the smell may not be as pleasant to other people as the smell of cookies.

A Great Dane Winter

Great Danes, known as the Apollo of dogs and beloved by anyone who has had a chance to get to know one were originally from Germany. The origin of the Dane name is unknown but nonetheless inappropriate. Despite that fact weather they hail from Germany or a Scandinavian country they seem oddly maladept for the cold that these countries have to offer. Short haired dogs such as the Rhodesian ridgeback are from scorched hot areas of Africa.

Short haired dogs do have one thing in common, they are hunters. The adaption of short hair seems to have something to with the hunting aspect of their existence. Running through thick bush and bramble are much easier if your are not snagging every branch and tree you pass. The sleek aerodynamics of many of these breeds can be observed, especially in greyhounds which have also been used to hunt in the past.

Modern Great Danes are not used to hunt very often and many can be found in homes in warmer climates these days but winter happens every year in most of the world and Great danes shiver at the thought.

We take a couple of steps to make our Danes comfortable for the winter. First, we make sure that they have something to lay on besides the cold hard wood floor. The Dogs would prefer that we let them on the furniture, but as I have previously discussed, furniture, if you want it to last is not great dane approved. We get the dogs some nice fluffy beds that will insulate them from the floor.

Next, we put out a couple of space heaters. Danes, may be tall, but when they lay on the floor they are in the coldest area of the house. The air below your waist can be 5 to 10 degrees cooler than the air above. They huddle by the heaters on especially cold days.

We also feed them a little more during the cold periods, giving them more calories than usual to keep warm. They don't mind this one bit, it just means don't forget to let them out a little more often. The Dane's quick metabolism usually prevents them from putting on much weight but a little extra insulation never hurt.

Dane clothing can be hard to find as well as expensive if you do find it so when we put a sweater or something on them it is usually a hand me down. This looks kind of funny but they appreciate the extra warmth.

There are many other things you can do that I do not routinely do because I live in a fairly warm area but, just to list a quick few. Cover them up with a blanket, get some dog booties, use a heated blanket, and warm their food and water.

Once outside in the cold Great Danes don't seem to have much problem, they have a very high pain tolerance but it is pretty forlorn to see them shivering on the floor in your home. I can easily envision a pack of Danes huddled around a great fire in a medieval German castle.

Poem A Day - 7/16/08 - WH Auden

I should preface this entry by saying that today's video almost didn't happen. I was immediately out of the house when I woke up this morning and have gotten back just in time to pick out a poem and do a reading of it. Conversely, I could have done another haiku or a short lyric poem, but I really didn't have much writing time today. Tomorrow there should be another full entry. I also selected this Auden poem because it's one of my favorites. I was going to do a Billy Collins one, but chances are that I'm going to be doing another cover Saturday and/or Sunday because of a busy weekend, so keep an eye out for Collins in the near future. This poem doesn't have an official title as far as I know, it's usually just called by the first line, like a lot of the Dickinson poems are. Anyway, here's the text. WH Auden Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone, Silence the pianos and with muffled drum Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come. Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead, Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves, Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves. He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song; I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong. the aftermost man on apple 1964 allotment 7

In the year 1968, every day is the same for Dr. Robert Morgan (Price): He wakes up, gathers his weapons and then goes hunting for zombies. Morgan lives in a world where everyone else has been infected by a plague that turns them into vampire-like creatures. They cannot stand sunlight, fear mirrors, and are repelled by garlic. They would kill Morgan if they could, but fortunately, they are weak and not very smart. At night, Morgan locks himself inside his house; during the day, he kills as many zombies as he can, burning the bodies. Flashbacks explain that his wife and daughter succumbed to the plague. Instead of taking his wife to the same public burn pit used to dispose of his daughter's corpse, Morgan buried his wife without the knowledge of the authorities. Morgan becomes aware of the need to kill the plague victims with a wooden stake when his wife returns to his home and attacks him. Morgan hypothesizes that he is immune to the bacteria because he was bitten by an infected vampire bat when he was stationed in Panama, which introduced diluted plague into his blood. One day, a dog appears in the neighborhood. Morgan chases after the dog but does not catch it. Some time later, the dog appears, wounded, at Morgan's doorstep. He takes the dog into his home and treats its wounds, looking forward to enjoying the company of his new friend. He quickly discovers, however, that it too has become infected with the plague. Morgan is later seen burying the dog, which he has ...

Should You Build Or Buy Your Dog Kennel?

If you're thinking about whether or not you should build or buy your own dog kennel here is some great information to save you a lot of time and trouble. Specifically, building your own kennel will cost about half as much as buying one, what type of dog kennel will you build and do you have any previous carpentry experience. By having a quick look at this article you should be able to decide if building is right for you.

The cost of a dog kennel always comes into play when a new one is being considered. You have to decide if you are willing to pay the price of buying a new kennel or building your own which can be as much as 50% cheaper. The only costs you will have if building your own dog kennel is the materials and your time. Another great bonus of building your own kennel is that you can customise it any way that you like. This is great for some people that have a different kind of kennel in mind.

After cost has been considered, the type of kennel you want is of next importance. There are many different types that you can buy and only your imagination stops you from what you can build. Some of the standard types of dog kennels are medium single kennels, large single kennels, and duplex dog kennels.

Medium single kennels are great for small to mid-sized dogs like Jack Russell's. These smaller kennels heat up much quicker than larger kennels so ventilation is key here. Large single kennels are suitable for bigger dogs like Golden Retrievers or Dobermans. They must be insulated properly to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Duplex dog kennels are great for people who need to house more than one dog. They can include a removable divider so your dogs can sleep separate or together.

After you have decided on how much you want to spend, and what type of kennel you want, you must assess yourself and determine if you have the experience necessary to complete the task. Carpentry knowledge will be a great help if you decide to build your own kennel and it's not hard to find some good quality building plans online to assist you. But remember, if you don't think that you are up to the task then it might be a good idea to buy one before you sink a lot of time and money into a project that fails.

So next time you come to the build or not to build cross roads just remember the above information. Particularly; how much are you willing to spend, how much time do you have available, what type of kennel do you want and do you have the required experience to finish off the job. With this advice you will be able to make an informed decision on what path to take.

Tips on Building a Dog House For Your Best Friend

If your best buddy spends a lot of time in the yard he needs a place of his own to hang out in. Building a dog house for your dog is a fun project for a beginner or an expert. It's big enough that you don't have to fiddle with bitty pieces and small enough that it's manageable. It's a project you can do alone or your kids can lend a hand with. The finished product will be used and greatly appreciated even if the corners don't come out exactly square and you use mismatched shingles. Dog will love it no matter what it looks like!

Build the Dog House to the Size of the Dog

It's tempting to build a house for the size of a Great Dane, but your Cocker Spaniel wont like it. Your dog is going to use the dog house for shelter, not a living room. He doesn't need or want a lot of space. A good rule of thumb is that it should be big enough for your full-grown dog to turn around and stretch out completely and small enough for his body heat to warm the space.

Vent the Dog House

Good airflow will keep your dog from getting too hot in warm weather. Your dog's breath will steam up the house in cold or damp weather and it needs to be able to escape so it doesn't help mold to grow. A flap over the door and vents in the roof work well creating a good updraft to pull out the moisture.

Keep Out the Weather

You want your dog house to keep your dog dry and warm in bad weather so be sure you have no leaks in the roof or holes in the walls that will let in rain or wind. Putting a flap over the door will also go a long way to keeping the inside of the house warm and dry. Building a dog house for your pet is a fun and rewarding project. Your dog will have shelter from the weather and you can be proud of building it yourself.

As dog owners, we want to give the best to our pets. We always see to it that they are well-fed, well-groomed, happy, and comfortable. Many of us want to provide a dog house for our canine best friend, and those who have the right set of skills make wonderful new homes for them built through love, hard work, and determination.

Now the challenge is that not all of us are gifted with such skills, and many do not even know the proper way to build dog houses, and for these reasons, we often buy ready-to-occupy homes for our pets. There is nothing wrong with it except that we can save a significant amount of money if we do it ourselves. How?

The answer to that question may not necessarily be as difficult as you might think. But first, let us get to the basics. There are two types of DIY dog houses which you can choose from: dog house kits and start-from-scratch. If you want the easy route, take the first one, but if you want something which you can work on as a 'labor of love' kind of thing, you can always build a dog house from scratch.

For dog house kits, you can find these at pet stores both online and offline. These usually include panels made of wood, PVC, or plastic; screws; roof; and some flooring. You just need to assemble them, and voila! You get a ready to occupy dog house in only a couple of hours, or less.

DIY Dog House

Here are the basic steps to follow when building the house yourself:

1. When building a dog house from scratch, you will need to have a very good dog kennel plan. You can purchase this online, or you can seek the help of a carpenter in making the plans.

2. Next, check on the measurements and make sure they are accurate. Once you have double-checked on this, cut the pieces of wood accordingly and join each panel. You will need boards, plywood, insulation materials, screws, gloves, safety glasses, nails, hammer, drill, measuring tape, and a saw.

3. Secure your dog's safety by screwing each panel tightly. Type of material used should be chew-proof and nontoxic.

4. Roof can either be A-shaped or flat. Build it in such a way that it is screwed securely to the structure but also removable so the dog house will be easy to clean and maintain. You can also opt to leave gaps at the bottom and sides so that there will be sufficient ventilation.

5. Paint the dog kennel with light colors to keep it cool.

There you have it- easy ways to build a dog kennel.

Ring Of Fire: An Indonesian Odyssey - Beyond The Ring Of Fire - 3/4

Part 5: Beyond the Ring of Fire: Lawrence Blair returns to a lost paradise at the outer edge of the known world eight years later on a retrospective voyage to many of the islands first visited and others never previously filmed. British brothers Lawrence and Lorne Blair set out in the 1960s on a marvelous, thought-provoking, ten-year adventure through the 3000-mile length of the remote Indonesian archipelago. Inspired by a dog-eared copy of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago -and his nineteenth century voyage of scientific exploration and discovery--their unforgettable odyssey set sail out of the Celebes (Sulawesi) for the Spice Islands on a perilous schooner crossing with the seafaring Bugis. Tossed to and fro from home port Makassar to isolated Aru Island-stalked all the way by rotting ship beams and the specter of pirates-they were rewarded with one of the rarest sights on earth-the fluffy white plumage of the elusive Bird of Paradise. Metaphysical, anthropological, and intellectual in tone-with a healthy dose of dry wit and humor-the Blairs take you along as they confront komodo dragons, chew betel nut in Sumba, witness a traditional Pasola battle, and herald the annual arrival on shore of the sacred nyale sea worms. Full of naive courage and boundless curiosity, they sought out Asmat headhunters/cannibals in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Undaunted, these dream wanderers went eye to eye with the fiery blast furnace of simmering Krakatoa. They ...
