What You Need to Clean Wooden Floors - A Supplies List

Generally, the cleaning of wood floor is simple and easy. Here are the supplies that you would need when cleaning wood floors.

1. Soft-bristle broom
Soft-bristle brooms are excellent for wood floors because they are no going to cause any scratches on the wood. Soft-bristle brooms can also reach into the grooves between the strips or planks of wood for better cleaning of dust and debris that get stuck in between. You can find soft-bristle brooms online or in a cleaning wares store. Choose a wide broom, preferably about 24 inches. Soft-bristle push brooms are also available, filled with fine black tampico and edge bristles made of fine horse hair. Alternatively, you can use soft plastic brooms that are cheaper. However, the price range for all soft brooms is only a few dollars apart so it would be better to choose the best one.

2. Dust mop
Although you can use ordinary dust mops, they might leave streaks on the floor or even leave scratches. Use a terry cloth mop instead or a microfiber dust mop. Microfiber dust mops have the advantage of actually attracting dust and allergens while you mop, making it easier to clean wood floors. Additionally, terry cloth and microfiber dust mops are excellent for both dry-mopping and applying wood cleaners and wood polish.

3. Vacuum cleaner and a soft brush attachment
Since wood floors are rarely wetted when cleaned, dust and debris would be easier to handle with a vacuum cleaner. Most vacuum cleaners already come complete with a soft brush attachment for wood floor products. However, if you already have a vacuum cleaner and you do not have this appendage, you can purchase the attachment online or in cleaning stores. Normally, a soft brush attachment would cost $30.

4. Wood Cleaning Solution and Polish
Check wood cleaning solutions and polish for their appropriateness for the type of wood you are going to be cleaning before purchase. Wood floor cleaners and polish should be manufactured with the safety of the wood product to be cleaned in mind. Excellent wood cleaners and polish should be able to help you easily take away dirt and grease build up on the floors. These wood cleaners and polish also restore the wood floor's original luster. Alternatively, you can use a neutral cleanser or water as long as the pH levels appropriate for wood are maintained. Some wood polish and cleaning solutions have refreshing scents instead of the strong smell of wax.

Best All Seasons Dog Housees Must Have Features

One of the reasons you buy a doghouse is to provide shelter for your pet year round. In the winter, it's even more important to pay attention to a few details to get the best protection for your dog. The basic style is not so important as the improvements you can do to keep the weather and moisture out and provide a dry and well-ventilated area.

The first thing you can do with almost any doghouse is getting it up off the ground. It doesn't have to be very high, just enough to keep water from seeping in and provide a little airspace between the bottom of the doghouse and the ground. A raised floor inside the doghouse can also do the trick. You can raise a doghouse by using bricks around the edges, tacking it down on the corners to keep it from moving off the bricks.

Roofs should be insulated (more in insulation below) and water proof. You can do this with house shingles or even a waterproofing paint or treatment. Using waterproof caulking around all the seams and anywhere water could get in helps a lot too. Moisture leads to mildew and can break down many natural materials like wood so you want the doghouse high and dry at all times.

You might want to use a waterproof paint or spray on the entire doghouse, inside and out if it's made of natural materials. It will extend the life and also protect your pet better against heavy rain or snow. It also makes the doghouse is to clean with just a hose and sponge.

Ventilation is important even in cold weather. If your style of doghouse has an over hang or any area that can be protected from rain, that's the best spot to make a good-sized opening for airflow. One on each side allows for natural airflow from breezes from any direction. Make sure you cover these opening with screens to keep any bug, insects, or unwanted critters from getting inside.

Just like in people houses, insulation is very important. Even in the summer, good insulation will keep your doghouse cool. And in the winter it can literally be a lifesaver. Since most doghouses are small, a high quality insulation material is still pretty reasonable in cost. All insulation materials have an R-value, that's an insulation rating used to measure insulations ability to resist heat flow. The greater the R-value, the more insulation it provides against heat and cold. The thickness or weight is not as important as the R-value of any insulation material.

It's also important to keep any insulation material dry, moisture can rot and destroy many insulation materials and even 4% moisture content can reduce the effectiveness by over 50%. So it's best to choose a waterproof material and one that is not harmful to your pet. A good solution is Dow 1" x 4' x 8' Extruded Polystyrene Insulated Sheathing that has an R-7 rating and is about $13 a sheet. You can do just about any size doghouse, all sides, with two sheets. This material is easy to cut and install.

Where you place your doghouse can have a big impact too. Keeping it out of direct sunlight will help extend the life of the doghouse. You should also consider the direction of any predominate wind and locate the doghouse behind any natural windbreak. A cement pad or bricked surface will help keep moisture at bay and give your dog a place to stay out of the mud, which is always a good thing for you and your dog.

If you do just a little bit of planning, you can give your dog a great shelter that's warm and dry in the winter and cool in the summer too. Waterproofing, insulation, and location can all contribute to extending the life of the doghouse and giving your favorite pet a better environment to spend time.

DIY Disasters - How Not to Build a Dog Kennel

Several years ago a friend who owned an outside dog enlisted my help to build a dog house. We had little woodworking experience so decided to keep it simple but versatile, keeping the dog comfortable in the heat and humidity in summer and the cold and snow in winter.

We measured the dog and drew a very rough plan that would be large enough that she could stand, turn around and lie down, but small enough that she would be warm in the winter. How difficult could building a dog kennel be? We used untreated 2"x4" wood (the chemicals used in treated wood are toxic to dogs), exterior grade plywood, deck nails, roofing nails, shingles, a hammer, drill and saw.

Using the measurements we basically constructed five framing rectangles from 2" x 4" lumber that formed the base and walls of the kennel. Plywood was measured and nailed to the base, with a doorway and several ventilation holes being cut into the plywood for the front panel before it was attached to the frame. The four wall panels were then lined up on the base panel and nailed to the base and each other.

At this point we discovered a problem with our dog house: the roof. Not only did we not have any idea about how to put together a ridge beam and rafters, but we had attached plywood level to the top of the front and back panels, forgetting about gable ends. An internet search led us to several sets of instructions, but none worked with our partially built dog kennel. After several frustrating hours we gave up and figured a flat roof, made in the same way as the walls, with shingles for weather proofing would work well.

For the first few weeks things were great, that is until the first heavy rains. Having no angle, water could not run off the roof, gradually leaking in through the joints and poorly placed shingles. We tried a few repairs but they were not very effective and the dog, who initially loved the kennel, stopped going in at all.

Thinking back I realize how unprepared we were. Having no experience we should have invested in good quality dog kennel plans that listed all the materials and equipment that were needed as well as providing step by step instructions. My own dog is getting older and needs a dog ramp. I was going to get some wood and start hammering, but recollections of building the dog kennel stopped me. I am doing my homework, will get plans, and make certain I am fully prepared before I start building.

Dogs Should Never Be Used For Home Protection

If you want a dog for home protection, the best type of dog is not a 100 lb muscle bound animal that can crush metal pipe. The best type of dog is a dog that simple makes a lot of noise. Most people buy dogs for house pets and a nice addition to the family. A dog that is bought for protection usually will not make a good house pet because they are trained to attack intruders.

Dogs have a hard time deciphering the good guys and bad. They see someone that does not come in the house often, and they don't know so they must attack them. How would you like it if you had 100 lb pit-bull jump on Grandma because she only visits once a year? If you are out on a walk and a child approaches your dog, he feels threatened and bits the child you may be help liable for those actions. You may be held liable to the point where if you caused the damage with your own hands. If you are not able to control your dog you also may be held liable, not to mention a dog that is out of control makes your life miserable.

One of the worst enemies to a home intruder is noise. If you have a small dog that makes a lot noise at the slightest rattle is going to be the best way to alert you, or scare away a would be intruder. Even though its true, a little 12 lb mutt will not be able to cause physical damage to an intruder, but the intruder does not know what kind of dog it is, and it will make them think twice if they want to brake in and possible come face to face with a dog with the head the size of a football and grin from ear to ear. At night, a dog that barks a lot will also wake you up. I'm sure you will have many nights when that dog seems to be barking at the wind. Even after several shoes are thrown at him he just wont shut up, but that one time he simply won't shut up, and you hear someone running away after trying to break in, you will thank him for life.

You want your house to be the least desirable to break in. If someone has to choose between the quit dark house across the street and the house with the annoying dog that won't shut up, chances are he will not pick the house with the dog. Plus, you will have a nice companion that will always be at your side and only asks for food water, a couple milk bones and a walk every once in a while.

Dog Houses

A dog house is essentially a small shed which is built into a shape of a little house with a triangular roof. It is the shelter to which the dog runs into for safety from either the natural elements or when he feels he is at risk. Dog houses are made primarily with wood which are treated to keep parasite infestation at bay. But did you know that dog houses have their own history, too?

The History of Dog Houses:

Dogs have always been popular companions of men even during the years 4500 BC. Egyptians are just one of the known people who domesticated dogs and built them their own homes. Dogs enjoy an esteemed position as pets and hunting partners even during that time. Others were considered messenger of the gods. Egyptians used to build kennels made of mud and brick for the dogs. These kennels are the first recorded dog houses in history.

Materials Used in Building Dog Houses:

Wood is the prevalent material used for building dog houses over the years. Wood is readily available, is low costing, has great insulating capabilities and has good structural reliability. Plastic dog houses became available during the 1960's. These plastic dog houses are portable and can be transferred from one place in the house to another. Designs also range from the simple replica of a small house to extravagant castle designs. This really is a far cry from the first mud and brick kennels of before!

Whatever the materials used to make the house, the function is the same - to keep the dog warm and sheltered away from the elements. It is important that the dog does not overheat and you should provide water and food for him as appropriate.

Outdoor Dog Houses

Many dog owners have no choice but to leave their dogs outside during the day when they are away or at other times. It is important that your dog has a shelter where it is protected from temperature extremes and the other elements. Your dog will feel secure and comfortable with the proper outdoor dog house and you will not have to worry that your best friend is suffering in the heat, cold, or rain, all of which can cause injury or health problems for your dog. There is a huge selection of dog houses on the market today and picking the best dog house for your dog to retreat to when outside depends on a few factors.

Dog houses are available in all sorts of shapes, sizes and styles. They range from very plain and traditional to very ornate and stylized even matching your house or with intricate architecture. The biggest factor in deciding on the type of dog house for your dog is the size of your dog. You want to get a dog house that offers your dog enough room to stretch out but that is not overly large or else your dog won't feel secure. If you have more than one dog a duplex type house with multiple entryways is a good choice. Dogs are happy with plain houses that are well insulated or ventilated depending on climate and are adequately sized, they don't require anything fancy. If you want to get a stylized dog house the look will be more for you although picking out your fantasy dog house can be fun.

If you are looking for something that offers a little more than the average dog house, there are many options and most are perfectly suited for use outdoors. One of the more common types of dog houses that are more than your average dog house are ones designed to match the main house. Dog houses can be bought that have windows, shingles, and then painted to match the exterior of your house. Dog houses also come in more styles than just the typical gabled roof and can include more than one story and other architectural designs.

While it can be fun to find a unique looking dog house, you should still value form over function and make sure that the dog house you choose will provide your dog with comfort and protection. If you live in a hot climate make sure your dog house is well ventilated or better yet air conditioned. Most outdoor dog houses can easily be converted into air conditioned ones or better yet you can find many dog houses that come ready to go with air conditioning units. If you live in a cold climate, you will want to make sure the dog house you choose is also well insulated or includes heat. Wood and metal are the most common materials you can find dog houses made of, and both are suited for use outdoors and have different features. Treated wood and plastic are both water repellent although wood is a better insulator and plastic is easier to ventilate.

Do Dogs Need Their Own Beds?

What is the most important piece of furniture in your home? Most people would say it's the bed. Since you spend about one third of your life there, it's very important, all right.

Well, dogs need their sleep, too, and a good bed is an essential part of their belongings as well.

Many people still feel that a dog can sleep anywhere... the floor, the back of the pickup truck, the corner of the porch, inside their dog house on the wood floor, or anywhere you make him stay. Some people even make their dogs sleep on the ground. After all, they're "just animals."

Sure, dogs will sleep anywhere, but it's usually because they have no choice.

But there are some good reasons to provide a good bed for Fido, and it will help him to be the good dog that you demand of him.

1. A good bed is soft but supports the dog's weight. If he has joint stiffness or is aging and has arthritis, a bed is essential to his well being.

2. It provides a layer of insulation from the cold floor, or in summer, possibly a too-warm floor.

3. It offers your dog a sense of security to have his own space that's always going to be there.

4. It also satisfies his need for space. Dogs are territorial, and if you don't give him a nice bed, he may choose a spot you'd rather he stayed off of, such as the sofa.

5. This benefit is for you: It keeps his hair in one place. Animals lose hair every day, just as we do, but keeping it in one spot helps you by preventing it from getting on your nice furniture, and allows a faster clean up if you only have to wash one item.

6. As much as indoor dogs can benefit from their own beds, it's even more important for your outdoor dogs. They need to feel secure and warm, too, and sleeping on the cold ground is not good for them.

Be considerate of your dog by imagining how you'd like to be treated.

Easy Tips to Get Your Own High Quality Doghouse on a Budget!

Anyone who owns a dog will know that they can be pricey.

Responsible dog owners are conscious of the costs which a pet incurs and so go into it with their eyes wide-open.

But, unfortunately, others wish to distance themselves somewhat from their pets, preferring them to sleep outside at night. Now there may be a whole host of reasons for this situation, and really it is the choice of the family as to how they prefer their homes to be kept.

For these owners, however, the necessity to purchase a doghouse is important, and if not done properly, can be very expensive!

The price of dog homes can range between "budget buys" which are not much more than a wooden shell, to very lavish constructions complete with a porch and steps to make their dog house into a luxury home!

Frustrating, of course, is the fact that the price-tag rises proportionately to the standard of the doghouse.

You might find the best option is to build your own doghouse.

A doghouse should be massive enough for your pet to nicely turn but no larger than that for it to keep the dog's body heat and so self-insulate to a degree. Given that your doghouse should be sized for your particular dog, you will find that, if you've an especially big or tiny dog, the store-bought ones are not ideal.

This where building your own can solve this problem!

The first is to make sure that the doghouse is raised from the floor a touch to stop moisture from seeping into the wood. This is the most important thing you want to stick to when building your own doghouse!

Why not decorate the completed doghouse to fit your pet's personality?

That's what I call a designer home, and will ultimately provide you with a high quality residence for your dog to call home.

The Wood Dog House - A Guide

When it comes to dog kennels, there are many different designs and styles available in a range of different materials. A wood dog house is, however, the most popular and preferred choice of many pet owners. Not only are wood kennels more practical, strong and durable, but they are also more stylish and eye-catching. You can either build a kennel all by yourself, shop at a local store or buy one online.

You would not find the type and range of dog house designs and styles that you would find made from wood in any other material, unless you get a kennel custom made, of course. Custom-made dog houses, however, are a pretty expensive option and not something that everyone can afford.

Advantages of Wood Kennels

A wood dog house is great for both indoor and outdoor usage.
Various amenities and accessories can be added to a wood kennel, including steps, porches and even balconies, if you want to make the kennel more eye-catching.
It has been proven that a natural wood scent helps keep dogs calm.
A wood dog house will always be crafted from high-quality materials.
These kennels have a more traditional look and feel.

Caring for a Wood Kennel

Keep the kennel clean at all times.
Get it treated periodically to keep termites away.
Do not leave the dog house unprotected outdoors. Although a wood kennel is always very durable and strong, there are some conditions that might lead to its early wear and tear.
Make sure that the kennel is splinter-free at all times.
Get in touch with a professional to learn more about maintenance of the kennel.

Whether you are looking for a small kennel or an extra large kennel, wood is always the best material to choose. A wood dog house or kennel will not only look good in the yard or inside the house, but it will also keep your dog calm and rested. When you pick out a kennel, ensure that you are buying the best-suited home for your pet according to its needs and temperaments, as well as your budget. It is always best to first choose a few kennel designs and later pick the one which seems best suited to your needs. Visit our website as we are always there to lend a helping hand.

The Basics About Wood Dog Houses

Although there are a number of materials known to be effective for use in making dog kennels, wood dog houses are quite popular in most households that house a dog or two. This is due to a number of reasons ranging from being cost effective to the overall quality of such structures.

We all love our pets, and since dogs are generally man's best friends, we all want to give our canine pals the taste of the best in life. They get access to the best dog food and diet and are given ample time to play around with the rest of the family especially with the kids who love them to no end.

It does not stop there though. Another basic need of animals, particularly dogs, is shelter. Just like humans, they need a place to rest and sleep in. They need something that gives ample protection from all the things a bad weather brings. Although they can stay in their owners' home, there are instances when they just have to have their own place as well.

Getting an outdoor dog house is the perfect option if the family is expecting a baby. These little ones are going to love dogs eventually, but they are highly sensitive to elements around them such as a dog's hair. Therefore, it is most preferable to keep the pet out of the house.

When it comes to the dog's living space, there is actually not much to work about. One can pick from a number of choices from. One of which comes in the form of wood dog houses. These can be bought in shops or made at home by do-it-yourselfers. The latter is more popular due to having a customized canine residence minus any outrageous costs.

Making a wooden doghouse is relatively easy. There are also a number of wood types one can make use of such as cedar, pine and hemlock. The first one is most preferred due to its capacity to resist decay and rotting as well as combat the ill effects brought about by insects. The other two do not have that valuable attribute.

One thing a dog owner should be careful about is the use of pressure-treated wood for the doghouse. It is true that this is a highly resistant material making it a perfect choice for building a doghouse, but the fact that it is treated means it actually contains certain chemicals that can be harmful to one's dog. Chromated copper arsenate, which is the commonly used chemical for treating wood, is deadly to animals of all kinds.

For the regular do-it-yourselfer, a dog house plan can do a lot of good things. There is a lot of this online, and anyone can either choose to follow it strictly or make changes to come up with a better suited output.

Most people consider their dogs as members of their own family. This is why having the right wood dog houses is becoming a major concern for dog owners. After all, we all want the best for our loved ones, humans and canines alike.

Dog Diet - Types of Diets at Various Ages and Health Conditions

Our beloved dogs require different types of dog diets at various ages. Like, if you have a cute puppy, it will need milk as its major dog food. While a fully grown dog will certainly need its protein to come from such food items like chicken or beef. You may also throw in some hard-boiled eggs and milk to the adult dog diet.

Do you know that puppies have greater fat, carbohydrate and protein requirements than their adult counterpart? Furthermore, the cute puppies are assigned more feeding session in one day than the adult animal. The dog diet requirements that are based on movement are more for younger dogs as they are obviously more active than the adult animals.

Older dogs require protein foods that are digestible and assimilated easily. The diet schedule must be accompanied by sufficient amount of water. Never attempt to feed elderly dogs with so much protein as this can prove to be harmful for their renal system with kidney failure as one of the serious effects.

Needless to say, elderly dogs should be given less feeds as their movements are very limited and hence they would need only a small amount of energy.

Diet for the female dogs, particularly the pregnant ones should not be fed too much as it can cause discomfort to the animal. Likewise, only special dietary type should be provided to nursing and pregnant dogs, one that will provide them with the balanced nutrition as well as sufficient supplements such as pet vitamins and minerals.

Dog diets on the other hand for the nursing pet with its puppies must consist of nutritional food containing good amount of the mineral calcium. This will ensure that there will not be any deficiency on calcium, which means the bones of your dogs will become healthy and strong.

Getting the Most Out of a Heated Dog House

There are a few common ways to go about getting or creating a heated dog house for your dog. Obviously, your dog doesn't have the dexterity or common-sense to stoke a wood stove in their home away from home; so it's necessary to make sure you're providing a heat-source that is going to be safe for your dog to be close to. The heater must be either safe to the touch, or be mounted somewhere that your dog can't burn themselves on.

First things first: It doesn't matter if you're buying a heated dog house with a heater built in to it, or if your adding a dog heater to your dog's existing shelter -- following a few general guidelines will make your expenses that much more beneficial to your dog.

1.Get the dog's house up off the ground. The very best thing you can do to maximize heat in the shelter is to place the doghouse on concrete cinder blocks. While it may seem pointless to put ice cold cinder blocks between the ground and your pet: The closer you are to the ground, the colder it will be (think of how cold a basement is compared to the upper levels of a home).

2.A heat holding blanket, or bedding material will go a long way to help hold heat in the dog house and let your dog's body maintain an even temperature.

3.A ceramic heated dog house will be slightly cooler than a heater that utilizes a heat bulb as the source of heat. Each have their own advantages, but be careful that heating elements, or direct heat from a bulb shouldn't be directed at any wood. Instead have the element/bulb directed at open space for safety (or read the instructions with your heater or ready-made heated dog house).

Buying a Large Dog House?

The question of the size of the house for dogs in relation to the size of the dog has two different sides to it. First, you can believe that the size of the dog house should be sufficiently large so that the dog has ample space to move about and can breathe freely. However if you take this argument to the extreme, you can say that if you construct a large dog house for a small dog, then it might easily be the case that the dog does not feel cozy and warm in the dog house and might not want to live in it. Yet it is undisputed that if you own a large dog like a Rottweiler or a Great Dane, you are definitely going to need a larger house for dogs than most.

A company made large dog house may not be easily available in your area, and you might have to resort to the online stores to order one of them. These online stores will give you a wide range of choices in terms of design and construction. Typically, a large house for dogs (for a Great Dane say) will be somewhere around 40-45 inches in width and depth. These dog houses will be available in purpose built and custom built versions. Obviously, the custom built versions will give you more flexibility and freedom in terms of the actual layout and design of the dog house, but they will also cost you slightly more than the purpose built versions.

The typical choices available online for a large dog include solid wood, fir wood, and other construction materials. In terms of assembly there are easy snap-together assemblies, easy three-step assemblies and so on. You can choose the roof to be slanting, two-way slant, or simple plain-and-flat. Furthermore, the roof can be made of wood, asphalt, or shingle. Then there are other options that you can choose from - whether you want to floor to be raised, the type of air ventilation you wish to have for the large dog house, and whether you want the dogs home to be portable (although this is hard to achieve for a large dog home, it can be managed in certain cases).

Your large dog home should fulfill the basic criteria for keeping your dog safe and sound. It should be able to protect your dog from the sun - the inside of the dog house should be cool irrespective of the outside temperatures. Then, it should also be able to protect your dog from the rain (or snow) - the dog house should not become wet and dank in the rains, as this could have a bad effect on your dog's health. The dog house should also protect your dog from cold in the winters - this can be achieved only by proper insulation practices. Lastly, your dog house should be impervious to winds, whether it is in the summer or in the winter.

The basics of constructing/building a large dog home is more or less the same as that of an ordinary house for dogs, only the scale is changed. However, you have to take care of the structural stability in the case of a large dog home more than you would have for a normal one. A larger structure needs more attention to stability and durability.
